Mingle.fit: live voice translation in the browser

Mingle.fit is a real-time translator we built and run ourselves. Two people speak their own languages, face to face or in a video meeting, and each reads and hears the other live. It runs in the browser with nothing to install.

The problem

The moments that need translation are a market stall, a hotel desk, a pharmacy counter or a call with relatives. They are not moments for installing an app, buying hardware or passing a phone back and forth.

Much live translation is tied to a specific phone or earbud brand. We wanted a translator that works on any device, in the browser, for a conversation that has already started.

What we built

A split screen for face-to-face talk

The screen divides in two. One half faces you, the other faces them, so nobody leans over or hands the phone across.

Meetings in many languages

In a shared session each person reads along in their own language on their own screen. A QR code lets someone join from their own phone, with no app and no account.

Auto-detect

Leave the other language on auto-detect and Mingle works out who is speaking what.

Read Aloud

Translations can be spoken in a natural voice, on the speaker or privately in earbuds.

Slang and dialects

A set of 1,689 hand-curated slang and colloquial entries across 14 languages, including four Arabic dialects, keeps casual speech from turning into nonsense.

Session history

Signed-in users keep searchable transcripts of their conversations.

How a conversation starts

  1. Pick two languages. Choose yours and theirs, or leave theirs on auto-detect.
  2. Put the phone between you. Your half of the screen faces you and theirs faces them.
  3. Just talk. Each of you reads the other in your own language in the same second, with Read Aloud if you want to hear it.

Design and engineering choices

No hardware lock-in

It works on any phone, tablet or desktop and with any earbuds, or none.

Browser first

Mingle runs over HTTPS in the browser. Nothing is installed, and a guest joins from a QR code.

Treat slang as a feature

Colloquial speech and regional dialects are part of the dataset, not an edge case.

Start free

Anyone can start instantly. Paid plans add things such as guest invites for a team.

Handle privacy plainly

Personal information is not sold for advertising, and only essential cookies are set unless the visitor accepts analytics.
